DNS Guide

What is an MX record?

An MX record tells the world which mail servers accept inbound email for your domain.

How MX works

When someone sends email to you@yourdomain.com, the sender looks up your domain's MX records. Those records list hostnames of mail servers and a priority value (lower is higher priority).

Best practices

  • Use at least two MX records for redundancy when supported.
  • Make sure each MX hostname resolves to an A/AAAA record.
  • Keep your SPF/DKIM/DMARC records in TXT records, not MX.
