DNS Guide

What is DNS and how does it work?

DNS translates names (like example.com) into IP addresses so browsers and apps can find the right server.

The short version

DNS is the internet's directory. When someone types a domain name, DNS answers with the IP address (or another name) that points to the service they want.

Common record types

  • A: points a name to an IPv4 address.
  • AAAA: points a name to an IPv6 address.
  • CNAME: aliases one name to another name.
  • MX: declares mail servers for a domain.
  • TXT: stores text like SPF/DKIM/verification records.

Propagation and TTL

DNS changes are cached. The TTL controls how long resolvers keep an answer before re-checking. Faster changes usually require lowering TTL before you update records.
